I fell in love with the drums around the age of 12. I really wanted to learn to play the drums at a young age, but I was not in a position to be able to own a drum kit. Like many young aspiring drummers, I purchased a set of drumsticks and began drumming on phone books, pots, pans, cans, or whatever I could find in the house.
I was fortunate to have a couple drummer friends in the neighborhood where I grew up in Southern California. One of these young drummers was my good friend Adam Watts. I gleaned from Adam as much as I could and I learned lots about music and drumming from Adam during my early teen years.
By the age of 13 I was playing the drums consistently with local youth group bands and at age 15 I became the drummer for Scarlet Promise, a local alternative rock band that consistently played the LA club scene in the 1990’s. We had the privilege of being the local opener for national acts such as Frank Black, Redd Kross, 4 Non Blondes, and Juliana Hatfield to name a few.
Shortly after the Soviet Union was dismantled and Russia became an independent federation, I was asked to play drums for a Campus Crusade for Christ “Easter in Moscow” concert where I performed live in Moscow’s Red Square for thousands of people. The performances were also televised to millions of homes in the former USSR. This was a very memorable experience. The alternative rock band Scarlet Promise eventually disbanded and I continued to play gigs for artists such as Donavon Frankenreiter and his band Sunchild, Love Tribe, Brian Bent, Ragged ol Sailor, and various contemporary worship bands.
I currently play drums at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA and also at other various churches in Southern California on a weekly basis. I have had the privilege to play drums for special guest artists at church over the years, including Matt Redman, Jeremy Camp, Danny Gokey, Andy Chrisman, and Ben Calhoun from Citizen Way.
I continue to progress and expand my musical abilities as I continue to study music and drums at every chance I get with other musicians and other professional drummers. I hope that my musical journey allows me to continue to create, play, and be a part of music that will have a positive impact on people forever. My true passion is to worship God with every ounce of ability that He has given me so that He is glorified and so that others are encouraged to freely worship too. I enjoy teaching and training other drummers and musicians to be worship leaders as well.
